Advanced Healthcare Directives
An advance healthcare directive is a legal document in which a person specifies what actions should be taken with respect to their health if they are no longer able to make decisions for themselves because of illness or incapacity. It also includes directions for end of life care and and sets forth the patient’s desires regarding organ donation in the event of his or her death.
This document is essential to ensure that (1) a person’s wishes regarding their care is clearly set forth, documented, and followed and (2) to reduce the inherent stress and possible infighting amongst family members should they be tasked with making these decisions in the absence of directions from the patient.
